The Meaning in the Metrics
Numbers, numbers, numbers. While we in this industry dedicate ourselves to important issues like focus on the patient (covered in our current roundtable and companion articles), many of us are fascinated by – and buffeted by – the metrics of our
industry. The popularity of our continuing analysis of the top companies in various
sectors – pharma, device, bio – plus our pieces on the HS&M Salary Survey and the
various statistical studies we showcase, prove that numbers mean something.
It’s in interpreting those numbers that we have to be very careful and insightful. In
this issue we feature the Top 50 Medical Device companies. “Top” of course refers to
their revenues, and not necessarily to their profitability. Nor does it reflect their innovation, influence,
industry impact or intellectual heft. All of these are important. In fact, all of them show up eventually
as factors in who moves up and down the list. If the company is managed well, attracts the best people,
has invested properly in R&D, or has set out on a mission that will eventually change its specialty, watch
for it to make its appearance, or rise, on our lists in one, or five, or ten years. One interesting number to
note is that it now requires revenue of over $1 billion to make the list, which is a step up from last year.
So while we watch the ups and downs in company revenues, compensation, and global growth, let’s
also pay attention to the whys and wherefores. The numbers tell one story, but the devil is always in the
details, which is why we look to fill HS&M not only with key metrics such as our Top 50 lists, but also
with articles from those in leadership positions within industry. Please reach out if you have interesting
insight or lessons learned to share. We are always looking for new executives to profile.
And always, please keep the feedback coming. It all goes to making the magazine better for all of us.
