WHAT EVERYONE WANT$ TO KNOW
By Cari Kraft, Jacobs Management Group
It’s the white noise behind everything we do. Am
I performing properly – and – am I getting compensated properly? Yes, we’re all in this business to
“make a difference,” as everyone in healthcare says.
And that’s largely true. But we’re also in this business
to “make a living” – and we want to know how we’re
doing on that, also. And, since there are so many
corporate and social taboos about discussing salary
and benefits with our co-workers, we have to seek
out independent confirmation of who’s getting how
much for doing what under which title.
This is why Jacobs Management Group, Inc., a leading executive search resource for the healthcare industry, conducts a Compensation and Hiring Survey
every other year for the medical device, pharmaceutical, and biotech industry. The 2014 survey is under-way, and we have received a strong response so far,
including representation from over 80% of the top
pharmaceutical and medical device companies.
The 2014 Compensation and Hiring Survey builds on the
feedback from prior surveys, which included results from
over 700 individuals and over 340 companies. Companies
ranged in size from $10M to over $100B, and over 94% of
the respondents had titles of manager or above. The survey
was designed to ask the important questions: Which industries are expanding the fastest? What are the compensation
structures for key roles? Where are the major struggles?
What strategies are they using to add top talent to their
ranks? These are the issues our survey answers with some
surprising results. Some key early findings include:
• Sales forces are growing among all sectors with
medical device sales growing almost 36% faster than
• Market teams are growing as well across the board.
• The gap between at risk sales compensation among pharmaceutical, medical device and biotech increases with the
greatest being top medical device reps who receive 64% of
their compensation in commissions.
The survey is still open. All participants will receive a survey summary so that you can see how you compare against
your industry. Please click the link above and you will be taken directly to the short survey which should take you no
more than 5 minutes to complete. All specific survey information and your contact information will be held in
strictest confidence. Results will be emailed as soon as they are published.
